Every gadget review I would publish at Digitalspidey.com would generate mixed feelings — excitement to test it and eagerness to photoshoot it.
In this review, I used my newly-acquired Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver and the pancake fixed lens XF27mm f/2.8.
The unboxing
Like the first premium model, the R5 comes with a similar white box that is so gorgeous. You know that you are buying an expensive item.
Even the accessories inside the box look premium — from the wall charger, the USB cable, the earphone with the micro-USB adapter. Yes, even without the 3.5mm audio port, you can still use an earphone via the provided micro-USB audio adapter.
A third-party earphone works without any issue with the R5 using the adapter.
The R5 is ridiculously thin at only 4.85mm that you might be disappointed to see that there is no 3.5mm audio port for headset. It also uses micro-SIM card. And the external expansion slot is also missing that is why Oppo has provided a huge storage of 32G already.
R5 Pulldown Menu
R5 pull down menu from the home screen looks like this. Initially, it shows six quick options — WiFi, Mobile Data, Ring (Audio Profile), End All, Screen Rotation, Brightness. To reveal the entire quick menu, you have to pull down further.

Camera
While it takes really beautiful, crisp, colorful and detailed photos, the R5 is kind of sluggish. Here are sample shots of the 13MP rear camera.
The front camera has a little problem on post-processing. You have to pause and make sure the photo was captured, or you will end up with a black image. It happened to me several times. Here is a screen shot of my gallery showing several black images.
Other than this issue, even the 5MP front camera takes real good photos.
Photos above are raw photos. R5’s camera has cool features for selfie aficionados, the beauty shots eight options to choose before you hit the shutter.
The protruding camera at the back did not bother me at all during the review. This maybe because Oppo has provided an equally gorgeous plastic casing that comes with the package. It adds additional protection to the smartphone.
Benchmark
For those who are curious about R5’s Antutu and Nenamark score, here it is.
Battery life
The 2,000mAH battery of R5 is balanced. It may discharge fast, I mean, if you turn on your mobile data and do your “usual” stuff — Facebook, IG, Twitter, and Youtube, it will be dead in about four hours. On WiFi, it performs better extending the life to about six hours.
The good news is, the rapid charging feature of R5 makes up for the fast draining battery. Within an hour of charging, even on a third-party charger, the R5 gets a full charge.

Conclusion
Oppo R5 maybe pricey at some point. But with the features it has like fast charging, beautiful camera, crisp display and a very thin smarpthone. I am sure you will like it too. It is one of the smarpthone review unit that I really liked. I used it as my daily driver and with an aid of the Xiaomi powerbank. I can sustain a 12-hour battery life with R5.
