Unboxing, Design and Build.
Kata i3s has the usual items in the package. It has still the white box and the “fish” logo of Kata and inside you will find the necessary items including the Kata i3s, the headset, micro-USB cable, slim wall charger (new design), warranty card and manual, and the 2,250 mAh battery.
Because the Kata i3S has no physical buttons, it can be mistaken to be the Mi3 by Xiaomi, but if you flip it back you will see some semblance of the Xperia series by Sony. The sides has metal parts making it a little bit heavy at 168.9g with the battery installed.
Compared to its previous model, i3S has a removable battery but just be careful in removing the back cover. It is very thin it may break easily if you don’t handle it well.
Display
The i3S has a vivid display, with its screen resolution of 720 x 1280 and 294ppi you will be happy using it and if you install your fave launcher like Go launcher or Nova and customise your screen. You will never think that what you are holding is a smartphone with a price tag of P6,499. I never experienced any screen lags. There is no issue likewise in the viewing angles. In the outdoors you have to play around with the screen brightness. I am using the built-in widget to control the brightness, I put it to the max when I am outside. Indoors I have to fix it to the minimum brightness to preserve battery life.
Connectivity
Its been a while now since I used an LTE enabled smartphone, so the HSPA+ of i3S is what I use when I am on the road, during coverage. I never had problem with its 3G connectivity. In this review I only used the default SIM. The Wi-Fi radio of i3S is likewise dependable, I never had issue during the term of the review.
Battery Life
Kata i3S has the same battery capacity with the i3, a 2,2250mAh. On a Wi-Fi connectivity doing moderate activities like Facebook, Twitter, IG, Spotify and occasional taking of photos, I get eight hours. It can extend to 12 hours if I only play Spotify and do casual Facebook activity. But if I turn on the data, that’s a different story altogether. I only got 5 hours. From 100% full battery down to 15% in 5 hours. You have to bring your power bank to sustain it.
User Interface
Stock Android is sweet. That means you can customise your smartphone. I installed Go Launcher, I replaced the default SMS app with Textra. That is just to avoid the default looks of Kitkat 4.4 of the i3S.

Camera
Kindly refer to the Photos taken with Kata i3S post. But I wish Kata can develop their own UI by now so that they can find better apps to bundle with their smartphones. The 13MP camera is not as impressive as the one in the M1 and M2. I saw washed out photos. But most of it are widely acceptable and I even used them in my blog posts. But I am looking for a more crisp, saturated, and accurate colors form the camera of i3S.
Performance
Kata i3S is not the flagship smartphone by Kata. I was asking them when is the next flagship to launch so that we can see some true power, speed and performance. According to Kata Philippines, they are releasing another smartphone before the year end. Perhaps it is the flagship model. But with 1.3GHz Quad Core, 1G RAM and 16G of storage, a 13MP and 5MP camera, the basic task required are delivered. I have no complain. Its not the fastest smartphone in the market, but at least the looks has been improved, and it has the latest Android OS. The additional storage is solved by the micro-SD slot.
Conclusion
Kata i3S will make a good Christmas present to your loved ones. Sparing P6,499 on smartphone with decent specifications, and a good looking design will make your recipient happy. It can be your daily smartphone also if you are not so conscious about brand. It is available in gray, black and purple so you have choices. Pre-order starts on November 13.
