Asus Zenfone C review: A fair deal at a fair price

This is already available at Lazada for P4595.

Asus Zenfone C at LAZADA

As I write this Asus Zenfone C review on the phone itself, I am quite impressed with the phone's remarkable touch response. Even as an iPhone user, I find the Zenfone's touch response pretty nice.
Beginning with the phone's appearance; at a price of P4595 this phone has a 4.5-inch display. In the front is a receptive touchscreen which is easily accessible with just a thumb and at the same time is wide enough to allow comfortable reading. The top front is adorned with the company name - Asus - in silver and in the bottom are the back, home screen and running app buttons. The volume rocker is on the right side of the phone along with the lock button while the front camera sits in the front top left corner.
Now I am tempted to click a selfie. Unfortunately with a mere 0.3 megapixel camera, the selfie hasn't come out as I wanted. The pixelated pictures from the front cam will surely keep selfie freaks away.
Asus Zenfone C review: A fair deal at a fair price
The Asus Zenfone C has a receptive touchscreen which is easily accessible with just a thumb and at the same time is wide enough to allow comfortable reading.
The back cover is plastic, which is justifiable given the affordability factor. The rear 5-megapixel camera is in the center with a powerful LED flash below it. The loudspeaker is cast in the rear panel's lower half while the charging/USB slot is at the bottom of the phone.
Now the rear camera doesn't prove to be as big a disappointment as its sibling on the front. The camera is good for the price and although it offers various modes to shoot images (auto, lomo, sepia, negative, pencil, etc.) that essentially drives out the need to have separate apps to apply filters. I would say it works better in daylight as the camera fails to focus well in low lights and the blur ratio is high. Yet, if you use flash in low light and keep your hands still, you can achieve fair results.
Sadly, Asus doesn't include earphones in the box and you have no option but to separately purchase the accessory for your music/calling needs.
I am not disappointed with the phone's sound quality. The sound is clear and you won't feel the need to reach the loudest point even if you are in a choked metro train, like I am right now.
Okay, just spotted that the Supernote app doesn't let you write more than the 300-odd words and asks you to move to another page.
Moving on, the earphone jack is located at the top-left of the phone, which makes it convenient for public transport commuters like you and me to simply plug in the headset and put the phone in the pocket without worrying about the cable getting twisted.
At 150g, this phone is a tad heavy as compared to Microsoft Lumia 535, which is also comparatively wider.
Also noticed that the proximity of the spacebar on the touch keypad and the home button is pretty less which is a little annoying as each time I hit the spacebar, I accidentally end up hitting the home button.
The Asus Zenfone C has a smooth interface which is easy to the eye. With Android Kitkat OS and Asus UI topping it, it makes for a good blend of Google's tech and Asus' own innovation. The phone offers 8GB of storage which is expandable up to 64GB via a microSD card.
There are some of Asus' own apps pre-installed in the device, like the Zen link set that has the Party link - for sending pictures to fellow Zen users over Bluetooth; Remote link that turns the phone into an input device for a synced PC; a PC link for playing multimedia files on PC via USB; and a Share link which is nothing but a dedicated app to pair with nearby devices over Bluetooth.
Based on Android Kitkat, the phone's interface is however smooth and the wider screen allows you to use the device with thumb swipes and taps easily. A scroll down and you can turn on the location, WiFi, Bluetooth with easy taps. Again, if you are too fast with the swipes you might end up tapping on the home button in between your app usage.
The Asus storage is another take on popular cloud storage options. It allows for Web streaming, storage, and sharing of photos. The Web storage also allows for Asus Weboffice mobility, clearly a take on the popular Microsoft Office suite for mobile. But given the fact that all these features come enclosed in this price range, it makes you rethink about the pricier choices in smartphones.
As I am continuing writing this review for the second consecutive day and I forgot to charge the phone last night, the 2100mAh battery is still surviving at 38 per cent while the FM continues to play in my ears. However, I haven't made many calls during this testing phase. On the other hand, the battery backup is akin to that of modern day smartphones which is if you step out with a full charge on a morning, you have to plug in the device when you return home late evening if you keep the mobile data/WiFi switched on the whole day and use battery consuming social media apps.
Working on a 1.2GHz Z2520 processor with Intel hyper-threading technology, this phone is appreciably fast. During the test use I did not come across any sudden app crash or any incidence of the phone freezing. Yet, I did observe that the volume controls on the right side need to be pressed in a 'right manner' for adjusting the level, especially when the screen is in locked mode.
Overall, I would give this phone a 3 on 5. The major disappointments are its camera and bloatware.
Highlights being the good display size and resolution which is comfortable for e-book reading for extended duration, the sound clarity, in-call recording feature, and battery support at par with smartphones in the same price range.
At P4595 if you need a dual-SIM smartphone that gives you good features for productivity but a little compromise on a other aspects like camera, body, and mostly unnecessary chunk of Zen apps which practically don't serve any fulfilling purpose other than eating up disc space, then the Asus Zenfone C is a fair deal for you.
